Sheffield A City Guide written by a student who lives and studies here

SHEFFIELD

Sheffield is back on the map! Thanks in no small part to the huge rejuvenation projects that have been undertaken in the city, something which is estimated to have cost multi-millions of pounds! It is an incredibly popular city with students and boasts two huge Universities in the form of Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield. Student accommodation is littered throughout the city as opposed to sticking within isolated enclaves around the institutions. The cost of living is pretty reasonable for what is on offer and an approximate student population of 48,000 is a testament to that.

Sheffield has in excess of 30 cinema screens, yes you read that right. As opposed to the national companies such as Odeon and Cineworld, the city also boasts a range of independent cinemas such as the Showroom and the Curzon. Sheffield is also a great hub for theatre fans to flock to. It has two hugely popular venues; the Crucible and the Lyceum, both of which regularly play host to high profile shows and events drawing in celebrities from around the country. Other cultural offerings in the city include the spectacular Millennium Galleries and the Kelham Island Museum which provides a fascinating insight into the Sheffield of the past including it's steel making history.

Music venues are a-plenty in Sheffield. Some of the more popular destinations for national and international bands and musicians include the Leadmill, Sheffield Arena, The Octagon, Corporation and a scattering of independent pubs and bars around the city-centre which have regular musical events throughout the week.

If sport is more your thing you might be interested to learn that the city has hugely popular Ice Hockey and Basketball teams, the Steelers and Sharks respectively, alongside a thriving football heritage which Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United battling it out for 'Kings of the city status'.

If you're looking for an enjoyable night out, and why wouldn't you? We recommend the West Street / Division Street area of the city. Starting the The Forum, situated at the top of the Devonshire Green, this uber trendy cafe / bar has an extensive menu of mouth-watering food that's not your average chips and cheese! The Harley on Glossop Road sells the most amazing burger and chip combos! The well endowed Cavendish is also a must-visit due to its mammoth size! Cheap drinks are a regular occurrence at Varsity which is spread out over two floors in the city-centre.
